Although nice to feed at the local park, pigeons can be very annoying and soil the look of a business or carry various other smaller pests (Fleas, beetles, ticks and mites), into buildings and barns etc. Ensuring the prevention of pigeons (and other birds) can help to prevent infestations of parasites. Diseases pigeons carry can include Listeria and E-coli and Ornithosis. The dried droppings in small particles can become airborne and lead to breathing difficulties. Metals corroding or eroding, stonework and brickwork can be damaged by the acid in the bird droppings.
Simple measures can minimize the pigeon population, by removing food sources and nesting places. Make sure refuse is disposed of correctly and tidily. Ask the neighbours not to leave out food for birds or other wildlife. Ensure block gaps in buildings which could be used as a perch or nest are not easily accessible.
Cover balcony openings with netting (proofing):- but ensure that other safety hazards have not been created. Make sure the netting does not allow children to climb the balcony more easily. Other proofing means can be barriers and spikes. Audio systems have become popular but can become less effective over time.
